When a Barcode is Not Found

Our database contains thousands of products, but with new brands and seasonal variations (e.g., different types of skimmed milk from various dairies) constantly entering the market, it may be possible scanning an item that isn't in our system yet.

How to resolve it: When the system does not recognise a barcode, the app user is automatically presented with two options directly within the app

  • Link the barcode to an existing ingredient: If the product is similar to something already in our database (e.g., another brand’s skimmed milk with the same nutritional values), the user can choose to pair the new barcode with that existing item.

  • Create a new ingredient manually: If the product is entirely new, the user can create it from scratch. By entering the name and nutritional information, the barcode will be linked to that specific product for future use.

By doing this, the database is improved for all app users
